Blowing Rock NC History

Founded in 1985 to preserve and protect the historical character and charm of the village, the Blowing Rock Historical Society is an active organization of over 300 members and plays a vital role in maintaining the unique sense of place that draws thousands of visitors to Historic Blowing Rock, North Carolina.

Edgewood Cottage c. 1890, home of artist Elliott Daingerfield. This structure was saved and adapted for reuse, namely the Artist in Residence program and other events and activities.

Historic Marker Program recognizes properties with historical significance, partnered with The Blowing Rock Art and History Museum.

Green Park Historic District was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The 1888 Museum is the last remaining cottage of the Watauga Hotel was refurbished and houses a collection of items from the town’s history for visitors to enjoy.

Historical Project, a new project of the Blowing Rock Historical Society, is a pictorial record of Main Street. The Blowing Rock Historical Society keeps a library of written and pictorial records of Blowing Rock. With the help of dedicated volunteers and pictures donated to the Society over the years there is a pictorial view of Main Street being put together every 3 to 5 years. The purpose of this project is to have a reference of the changes of Main Street over time whether they be from cultural, technology or economy.

The Blowing Rock Historical Society’s ongoing efforts include recording data of historic significance to Blowing Rock, North Carolina serving as a resource for deposition of furnishings and artifacts, and rallying to preserve historical buildings and sites, to name a few. New members are always welcome to Join Us.

Besides our work endeavors, we have many Fun Events too! These include the annual Tea and Tour and dinner get-togethers where an author, musician, or others share their time and talents with us.
